Diy Home Improvement, Bathroom Improvement

Any advice or guide on the interior design of a bathroom should be based around one simple concept: keep it simple. Rooms inside of a home should have functional aspects, and if one room is designed for very specific functions, it is the bathroom. There have always been many jokes about the “throne” of a home, but the honest fact is that creating a visibly appealing and comfortable bathroom will inspire positive feelings to its users.
Hardware choices should be the primary concern when designing a bathroom. Faucets and spigots, as well as tubs and toilets, produced in a variety of shapes and materials can centrepiece a design. Open showers are currently popular with the younger upwardly- mobile crowd, and claw-foot bathtubs are almost always considered to be classic and attractive. Evaluate privacy issues first; don’t put the toilet and tub too close together.
Is it a possibility to centre your bathroom around a favourite theme? The answer is most certainly “yes.” Keeping in mind that “less is more” while choosing a decoration pattern that will coordinate with the rest of the home will open many design possibilities. Finding a colour or pattern inspiration from simple or small artwork may be the first step toward creating a bathroom masterpiece.
When designing a bathroom’s tiling, take the time to shop around through different hardware, decoration and craft stores. The more expensive of the different types of tiles should have durability, aesthetic value, and a non-porous surface. It should be easily cleaned and sanitized, and it needs to install easily without any expensive or caustic glues or cements. Get creative also; all tile in bathrooms need not be made of porcelain.
After the design and production of a space-conscious and attractive bathroom have been completed, focus on decoration accessories to bring out personality and individualism. The bathroom is the most sacred room of any interior, and placing prized possessions on the walls or shelves is an interesting way to bless this special room. Use courageous ideas and do not be afraid to take chances, but above all: keep it simple.
Take a look around your own home. Is what youve been referring to as your time-honoured home decor really just old fashioned? If so, maybe its time for you to join the remodelling parade. The good news is: there are lots of easy, low cost ways to give your homes look a nice pick-me-up.
The bathroom is one of the most popular targets for home improvement. While any project involving plumbing tends to intimidate the average homeowner, there is a lot of new product technology designed with the do-it-yourself in mind.
One of the easiest and most cost efficient ways to spruce up a bathroom is to replace the faucets. Improvements like this have a huge impact on the functional and aesthetic value of the space. You can create an entirely new theme for your bathroom — such as contemporary, old world, or European — based on the design of your faucet, says Angie Coffman, director, Delta product marketing for Delta Faucet Company.
Before purchasing a new faucet, its a good idea to do some preliminary research. You may also want to consider a budget before beginning your search, as prices can vary widely. You will find that there are many different styles and designs in bathroom faucets. Consider ahead of time whether you want a single-handle or a double-handle faucet. Notice how the handles feel in the palm of your hand. Do you want something that is delicate or more heavy-duty? Explore different spout designs and finishes as well. Decide whether or not you want an escutcheon, the decorative plate beneath a faucet. An escutcheon will also cover extra holes that might be drilled in the sink.
Look for a faucet that installs easily — you may notice language like quick connect or no adjust, indicating that minimal tools are required. Pay close attention to the existing hole configuration on your sink. How many are there and how far apart are they? Do you need a single-hole, 4-inch centre-set, or a wall-mounted faucet? Your single-handle faucet may have three holes underneath, but you dont necessarily have to replace it with another single-handle. Theres a design, called a mini-widespread, which provides flexibility for customers who have a single-handle faucet, but are looking to switch to a double handle, widespread look. The Victorian Mini-widespread from Delta is an example of a faucet that offers intricate, old-world styling in a smaller sink setting.
Make a Lasting Improvement
Look for a design that wont soon be outdated and one that will complement the rest of your bathroom, one that will stand out without sticking out, according to Coffman. Keep in mind that you will probably be using this new faucet for years, so choose something that is durable, versatile, and a brand that is considered reliable.
Installing high quality products in a bathroom will result in a high return on your home remodelling investment. That is why it is important to choose a faucet that offers long-lasting, worry-free performance. You want to look for things like solid brass construction and a company that offers a lifetime limited warranty, along with customer support, in case you have questions while installing the faucet yourself.
Now that you are ready to give your bathroom the facelift it has been waiting for, have a few tools handy for the installation. A pair of adjustable pliers, along with an Allen wrench and basin wrench, will probably be necessary. Also pick up some silicone or caulk, and Teflon tape. Always double check the instructions on your faucet for any other tools or supplies needed.
If you are looking for additional support, try consulting your local home improvement store. Or, check out manufacturer Web sites, such as deltafaucet, for installation tips. As you join the millions of Americans remodelling their homes this year, choose your projects wisely and remember that even seemingly small changes, like a bathroom fixture upgrade, can add value to your home.

Natural Stone Tiles in the Home

Natural stone wall and floor tiles can add subtle elegance and make stunning features in your home. These materials were once the preserve of kings, but due to the modernisation of manufacturing processes in recent decades these materials now offer practical, affordable and luxurious solutions for walling and flooring. The four most popular kinds of interior stone tiles are Limestone, Granite, Travertine and Marble.Limestone is a sedimentary stone which is commonly quarried and used in the UK as a building material, although limestone tiles are imported from many areas worldwide, predominantly India, Israel and Turkey. Limestone Tiles are one of the softest stone tiles and should not be used in any area which receives heavy traffic. The colours of Limestone tiles are mainly earthy tones of greens, blues, greys, creams, beiges and dark browns, Limestone is also a popular stone tile for bathroom areas. Granite is an igneous rock which can be found all over the world including most of mainland Europe, but granite stone tiles are predominantly imported from India and China. Granite is known for having varying colours and patterns within each variation of the material and it is also known to provide stunning black tiles. Granite stone tiles are often used in contemporary, luxurious environments but they are also being more commonly used in kitchens, where the owner wishes to match their stone tile floor to their kitchen countertops. Travertine is actually another form of Limestone, but due to its distinctive appearance and nature of the material it is commonly regarded as a unique material. Travertine tiles come in a variety of dark and light, beige and yellow tones. They are also produced to several different finishes including honed, filled, unfilled and tumbled. Travertine tiles have become very popular in recent years for residential kitchens and bathrooms. Marble starts life as Limestone which is then crystallised by immense heat and pressure. Marble tiles come in a multitude of colours and patterns which are created from the minerals and chemical elements in the stone. Some of the most popular marble tiles are white, many of which originate from Carrara in Italy. Marble tiles are one of the hardest wearing stone tiles and are commonly used in commercial areas such as shopping centres and corporate offices. They are also popular in high-end residential developments which require classical apparel.

Total Home Security With Solar Motion Lights

Have you ever come home after sunset and had a difficult time navigating your walkway or sidewalk? Many people frequently experience this frustrating, and often dangerous, issue. Unlit walks and front doorways can allow someone to take a fall, but they can also expose the same person to a potential for crime.

Burglars and thieves often “scope” out neighborhoods looking for potential targets, and unlit porches and doorways offer great cover for their nasty business. Many homeowners, however, don’t have lighting because they don’t have any electrical source running to their yard or doorway. What’s the best solution to their problem? Solar lighting of course!

Advances in solar technology have produced many helpful lighting fixtures, and not all are plain and unattractive utilitarian options. There are gorgeous solar powered accent lights, heavy duty motion sensor solar powered lights and even path lights with built-in spotlights. A combination of such fixtures could easily make a lawn beautiful and safe.

For instance, a homeowner could line their sidewalk leading to the front door with low-key accent lights and then set a large path light on either side of the stairs leading to their porch or front door. These units could have adjustable spotlights that add brightness to the steps or to any areas of shadow where a burglar could lurk.

Additionally, the same homeowner could use solar security lights to be triggered by anyone approaching their garage doors, front door and even back and side doors into the home. Quite often such lights serve as an effective measure against burglars and wandering animals.

One of the best features to such a system is the tremendous financial savings available through the use of an entirely solar powered lighting design. The small and easy to install collector units for all of the lighting fixtures can be placed within a significant distance from the units they power. This allows the lights to be situated in the most strategic locations, regardless of the amount of sunlight that actually strikes them.

For the relatively low cost of the individual units and the small amount of time required in their installation, a homeowner could have an effective security measure surrounding their entire property. Additionally, solar powered lights can be installed both indoors and outdoors and this means that sheds, garages and backyards can also be outfitted with solar accent and motion sensor units as well.

Bathroom Tiling Ideas to Enhance the Look and Value of Your Home

A wide variety of bathroom tile is available.

While contemporary styles like the harlequin design, natural stone and marble tile designs are always desirable, it is the colorful designs that are often more affordable and as a result, fast becoming popular themselves.

The harlequin pattern is a true classic which is basically, a bathroom tiling design that boasts the harlequin motif which is arranged as diamonds rather than squares. If you can’t picture the harlequin bathroom tiles, picture black and white squares turned on their side to resemble a diamond. The tiles tend to be a little longer and the pattern resembles a jesters costume in a way, although you can opt for this classic design in just about any combination of colors from earthy tones to bright reds.

Tile your bathroom with a traditional harlequin design, add shiny new fixtures and you’ll have a beautiful shiny clean looking bathroom that will look like it cost a lot more than it does.  Using chrome and other polished metal fixings looks great initially, but they mark easily and don’t look so good when they are dirty. It’s something to consider when you have young children that enjoy making patterns and marks with their hands on your tile and fixtures.  Tile chips too. Cleaning tile can be a daunting task as well.

If you do not prefer something flamboyant, you can go for simple and elegant bathroom tile designs. If your budget is tight, you could use ceramic tiles which are cheaper and also are durable. There are also a huge variety of mosaic bathroom tile designs choose from.

Be creative with your bathroom tiling ideas

You can get creative with your tile design and convert your bathroom to a giant aquarium, or perhaps an oriental rock garden?  Maybe a forest theme, or just about anything you can imagine, just get creative.

How about tiling the floor? There are tiles for floors ranging from smooth, through grainy and even anti-skid tiles.  A well designed tile floor can catch your guests attention like nothing else!

There are plenty of other ideas to choose from, such as natural stone. Natural stone is very good at soaking up water marks. If money isn’t a concern there is always Italian marble as for your bathroom tile design. This can also be used for surrounds in addition to the wall and floor plus comes in a range of beautiful finishes.

Bathroom counter materials

The material used for bathroom counters can completely change the appearance of your bathroom. There are a great many varieties of bathroom counters to choose from. It all really depends on what kind of feel you have set your sights on. If you want a raw look, you could have a pre-cast building material made from concrete. There are also bathroom counter materials that use hardened mortar bonded with tile, crushed and many other types of unique materials you will find with a little research.

Tiling a bathroom isn’t overly complicated; however it is not really a job for an inexperienced beginner.  Cutting and installing tile requires special tools and a lot of practice.  It’s really a job for a professional.

Solar Home Power Can Save You Money

Tiling a Bathroom in Your Home

My wife and I took on the home diy project last summer of tiling a bathroom in our home. And we won! But had a few scares to show for it. Not literally, but we learned a lot about tiling that we had not thought of. I guess we may have been a little over confident, because I am a contractor by day.. and thought I knew more that I did.It was the details of doing tiling that were hard to find. Yes, find. I got a book from a supply store, looked at DIY web sites, etc. and still had to get advice from my tile subcontractor, that has done many jobs for me. In fact, I had to call him several times. The Tear Out: I did fine here. Just a little hard work, but that was OK. The acrylic shower stall was fun – get out the saw-all and go at it. The wife really liked the dust! The Concrete Board: No problem. Make sure you get the right blade for your saw. Just like working with plywood except you need to put in about 3 times the number of screws to prevent any movement through the years. The Leveling: Again no real problems. But we did not have any unlevel places in the floor. If you do, you may have to level the floor in more than one step. Don’t think you can level with the thin-set, either… won’t work. Also if you are going to use a light colored grout, get light colored thin-set.. makes it much easier to not get dark specks in your grout. The Tiling: I had a lot to learn about cutting. Get the right saw and tile break. Don’t go cheap on this part. Should be able to rent a good saw. Study up on layout tips too. There is more than one right way, but very critical. Our biggest problem was getting the thin-set the right thickness on the walls. It slowed us down a lot.Grouting: Did good after getting the hang of it. Just be sure you don’t wait too long to get the cleanup done or it can be tough. It is easy to miss some wiping out and you will notice later, believe me.Over all a good project. It is not too hard for almost anyone that is willing.Hope this helps.

Solar Home – Conserving Pv Power

Solar homes. Many people talk about them, although few in the U.S. do more than talk. They are said to reduce utility bills. Some say a solar home cuts utility bills drastically. Some are able to sell excess power back to the power grid. Savings are not automatic, however. Steps must be taken to make the solar home efficient; to conserve the electricity that is produced.
Ways to conserve solar photovoltaic power in the home must be found. The home owner must actively seek out ways to make those photovoltaic (PV) panels on the roof as efficient as possible. Photovoltaic power is free, but it cannot be generated in unlimited quantities. It is important to take measures to use it to best advantage.
Of all the ways to conserve solar photovoltaic power in the home, the most important is probably replacement of power-gobbling electric appliances. Home lighting can also be changed to conserve solar photovoltaic power (PV power). Finally, power usage can be reduced by making every person in the solar home conscious of conservation methods.

12 Ways to Conserve Solar Photovoltaic Power in the Home

1. Shop for energy-efficient appliances and home electronics for your solar home. Most products in this category carry EnergyGuide labels. These labels give an estimate of the products’ energy consumption or energy efficiency, and show the ratings of similar appliance models. In the U.S., appliances and home electronics that meet strict Department of Energy (DOE) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) energy efficiency criteria carry Energy Star labels.
2. Replace an electric water heater in a solar home with an energy-efficient propane or natural gas heater. Connect the new water heater to a solar water heater system. The sun will preheat the water, and the new unit will have less work. Wrap the water heater with thermal wrap to retain heat.
3. Replace the solar home’s electric furnace with an energy-efficient propane or natural gas unit. Install a solar panel air heater to reduce the work load of the new furnace. If you are building a new solar home, consider passive ways to heat the floors and air, further reducing the workload.
4. If the solar home is in a hot, dry climate, use an evaporative cooling unit in place of an electric air conditioner.
5. Check weather stripping around all windows and doors. Seal cracks and openings. Stopping air leakage in and out can improve indoor climate control in every season.
6. Insulate the solar home well. Insulation will keep heat or cool air from escaping. It will also keep outdoor cold or heat from entering readily.
7. Use heavy, insulted drapes and window shades/blinds in the solar home to keep out hot or cold air, making cooling and heating units work more efficiently.
8. A serious solar home owner can save even further by using a solar oven for cooking whenever possible. Especially good in hot climates or summer months, a solar oven will cook food with solar energy, and avoid heating the home. Money is thus saved in two ways.
9. Control of computer usage is another of the many ways to conserve solar photovoltaic power in the home. Monitors should be turned off whenever the computer will not be in use for 20 minutes or more. The CPU and monitor both should be turned off when the unit will not be used for 2 hours or more. Power down or sleep modes should be set.
10. Replace light bulbs with Energy Star qualified compact fluorescent light bulbs. If every U.S. home replaced just one light bulb with one of these bulbs, we would save more than $600 million in annual energy costs. To the solar home owner, such savings are vital.
11. Maximize your use of daylight, turning on lights only when necessary. Use windows to advantage, and install skylights where possible.
12. Landscape your property to block the heat of summer sunlight, permit winter sunlight. Deciduous trees near the solar home will shade windows in the summer, and let warming sunlight through in winter months.
Ways to conserve solar photovoltaic power in the home are not limited to these twelve, but if these alone are used, the increase in efficiency will be tremendous

How to Protect Your Home or Business With Solar Security Lights

Home security and crime statistics indicate that a burglary occurs roughly every fifteen seconds in the United States. This means that such crimes take place almost round the clock. While daylight serves as a big deterrent to home invaders and burglars, the night time provides good “cover”.

So, how do you eliminate that cover without racking up big electricity bills and home security system fees? It is easy with the installation of solar powered landscape lighting. Walkways can be lined with attractive and effective lights, motion sensor units can be stationed at all entrances and unobserved areas of the home and yard, and they can even be placed inside such areas as garages and sheds!

With solar powered security lights the only expense for installing a complete home and yard lighting plan is the cost of the units themselves. Small solar panels and collectors make it easy to install the lights wherever they may be needed and gather the power of the sun to operate the system all night long.

Let’s consider a “typical” yard and home. There will be a driveway of some sort and perhaps a garage. Because the garage is the typical point of entry for many thieves, it is important to use solar lighting at this location, as well as good locks on all doors. A homeowner could install solar powered accent lights along the edge of their drive and a motion-sensor light above the garage door. This would be triggered by anyone pulling into their yard or walking anywhere near the entrance to the garage. Additionally, with the benefit of the solar collection panel, a motion sensor unit could also be positioned inside the garage. A good location for such a fixture would be immediately above the door that leads from the garage and into the home.

Strategically locating solar security flood lights  would remove a would-be burglar’s element of comfort or security that is provided by the cover of darkness, and the motion sensor lights may lead them to believe that they have also triggered a security system as well!

While the solar accent lights along walkways and the drive illuminate the entire area, and eliminate the chance for a burglar to approach any entryway under cover of dark, they also make it much safer for those arriving home in the evening. They provide a guide to the safe and level sidewalk or pathway and serve as a nice welcome home!

Home Decorating Ideas

In today’s economy everybody is spending less, but wanting more. So how can you get your apartment to have that “Designer look” at a lower price?

First, DIY or Do it yourself. It will save you tons of money with your home decorating projects if they allow this yourself. See your local book stores or library and you’ll see countless books on home decorating ideas and do-it-yourself projects.

Start collecting design magazines and clip out the pictures of rooms that suits you. Study your pictures; observe the various architectural features like windows, fireplaces, recessed ceilings and decorative crown moldings inside the space.

Also note different furniture styles used inside the space, window treatments, upholstery fabrics and floor selections. Study the lighting which was selected, rugs and home decors accessories. Consider, what did you want most or least about these?

Also note the different furniture styles used within the space, window treatments, upholstery fabrics and floor selections.  Study the lighting that was selected, rugs and home décor accessories.  Ask yourself, what did you like most or least about these?

Keep a decorating file on hand to inspire and delight your creative senses.  Take the pictures with you when you go shopping to keep you on track with the style you are searching for.

Take a trip to your local Lowe’s and Home Depot stores to see all the DIY books and magazines they carry to help you get started. They also have special classes to teach you how.  DIY doesn’t sound so scary now, right?

Second, start with one room and third, stick to your budget.  Sounds easy?  Well, in fact it’s easier than you think.  I think what really hangs people up is that they are overwhelmed by the magnitude of the project.  That’s why I say start with one room.  It’ll be much easier on the budget.

Did I say “budget”.  Don’t fret.  It’s not such a dirty word.  And in this tough economy, even the rich have a budget.  You can decorate these days on a very tight budget.  It’s just learning how to be smart and creative.

(I would like to inject at this point that if you are considering on hiring the help of an expert instead of doing it yourself, make sure to ask the expert for referrals of customers they have helped in the past.  Hire only reliable, reputable contractors and ones that guarantee their work.  Get a contract in writing.  I am not responsible for who you hire.  Do your homework!)

However, if you are going to do this yourself, and YES YOU CAN, you will need to evaluate your budget, which will be determined by if you are doing the whole apartment, or room by room.

Other factors to consider to stay within your budget are the size of the room, the design theme or style you want to achieve, what needs to be replaced or repaired, and furniture, fixtures or accessories you will need to purchase.

Apartment decorating is fun and exciting.  You can make any home spectacular, inviting and comfortable, no matter what the size.  So let’s get started.  First, analyze the room you will decorate and determine what it is that you like and don’t like about the space.

Now think about your personal style you would like to achieve in the space.  If you’re not sure what your personal decorating style is, shop a few furniture stores and designer showcases in your area.  You will get lots of home decorating ideas this way.

They group comfortable settings together called “vignettes”, pronounced “vin-yets” in different styles.  This will help you determine the styles you like and don’t like.  You’ll begin to affirm what strongly appeals to you and what doesn’t.  And what you would like to incorporate into your own space.

Now, ask yourself these questions:

What do I feel most comfortable in?  Do I like formal or informal?  Casual or elegance?  Traditional or contemporary?  Your personal style is an expression of who you are, what you like, your tastes, your moods, your life experiences, travel, education and so forth.  It shows YOU, by way of color, texture and style, just by what we display in our spaces.

Color is another factor to consider in your design theme.  You’ll want to pay close attention to what colors excite you and make you comfortable, happy, or even sad.  Are you drawn toward warm colors like reds and yellows?  Or cool colors, like blues and greens?

Besides the furniture stores, you can also get great home decorating ideas by surfing the Internet.  With just a simple click of your mouse the world of decorating is opened up to you.  You can get decorating ideas, hire experts, get DIY project ideas and purchase the products you want, all through the amazing world of online technology.

You’ll be simply amazed at the many online stores that cater to your budget.  From flooring, walls and windows, to window treatments, furniture and accessories, you’ll get tons of great ideas, as well as great prices you can afford, to start your journey on your apartment decorating.
